****WARNING: POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD****

I will say, however, that I do not believe in spoilers for films that have true merit. If a movie is only worth watching for some big reveal at the end, it isn't worth anything at all.
Proceed with caution.

Jacques Tati uses color in such a captivating, unprecedented way. I guess I don't know for sure, but I've certainly never seen anything like it before. The image I chose is a great example of his comedic choice of lighting. I really enjoyed all the little nonsenses that went on, seemingly in the background of this movie. In fact, the movie felt like it was the background. Nothing really happened. There was no climax, no ending, just Tati playing with cinema. Very enjoyable!

The Sacrifice (1986)

One Word: Contemplative
I fell asleep to this movie about 4 separate times before being able to get to the end last night. I tend to watch movies right before bed, so it's not really the best time for movies like this. I found myself forgetting small details that I would have remembered if I had just watched it all in one day. Visually, this film is gorgeous. I want to live in this house that Tarkovsky built and destroyed for this movie alone. I wonder if the builders are still around and taking commission. The props, the scenery, the script. All of it is very satisfying. It can be difficult for me to sit through movies that continue to circle around the point, only to arrive on it at the very end, but even getting to the end and being confused still, I was happy to have experienced it. Sitting and thinking about it more, I am beginning to understand the religious themes under it all. Our hero makes a sacrifice of his earthly things, betrays his home, and connects with a spirituality in a time of uncertainty and fear. He is forced to leave behind what he loves most; but the tree he planted in the beginning of the movie still stands at the end, and his son has a greater inhertance than any property his father could have left him.

Dangerous Liaisons (1988)

One word: Depraved
This movie felt like a personal attack. I really don't want to believe that people like this exist or have ever existed. I found it interesting how the scripting was super easy to understand, when typically period pieces take me a little while to comprehend. Honestly it's just 2 hours of John Malkovich r*ping as many women as he can to get revenge on someone else. It does a really great job of pinning all of the blame on the woman in the story, which honestly was very unsatisfying. I feel like what happened to Michelle Pfiefer's character happened to me, but I can't place why. All of this considered, the costuming and sets where gorgeous, I was absolutely glued to the screen, and it was an interesting plot. I just don't like when bad thing happen.

Down with Love (2003)

One word: Catcherblock
This has to be the gayest straight movie i've ever seen. It takes some turns and I kept getting worried about the direction and moral to the movie, but they conclude it with a good balance. This movie was so fun, I could watch it tomorrow (that is rare for me). I don't know if I've ever been as attracted to a man on screen than to Ewan McGregor as Catcher Block. The sets and costuming were a caricature of the 1960s, which I appreciate in a movie with such a playful tone. This was just the movie I needed to cheer me up from a rough day. I can't seem to figure out if the name Catcher Block is an innuendo or not, it sounds like it's supposed to be, but I can't really pin it.
